An Intangible Hope

“For You are my hope, O Lord God; You are my trust from my youth.”

—Psalm 71:5 (NKJV)

Two preschoolers in my class argued over a toy. The little girl said with a pouty face and whiny voice, “He hurt my feelings!” All of a sudden, she looked at me with a clear face and voice, and asked, “Where are my feelings?” As if they were a body part like an arm that someone could hurt. It is hard to explain to a three-year-old where your feelings are because they are not something tangible that we can touch.

As believers, the hope within us is also intangible. Hope is not something we can touch or see, because it is within us. But to find the source of our hope, all we have to do is look at the cross and the empty grave of Christ. Because of the cross we are forgiven. Because of the empty grave we have the hope of eternal life with God. Through what Christ did for us on the cross and resurrection, we have hope for this life and eternity.

Like the psalmist, we can say, “You are my hope, O Lord God.” We have hope because of the love He showed to us on the cross and the power He showed through the resurrection. His love and power make a difference in our lives as we seek to know Him more. Christ is the reason for the hope within us.

Pray:

Lord God, You are my hope and the one in whom I can trust. Thank You that no matter what happens in my life, I have hope in You. Guide me as I lead preschoolers to see the hope of Christ in me. Amen.
