Youth on Mission is the coed missions education organization for teenagers ages 12–17 or in grades 7–12. Youth on Mission is just one of the missions education organizations offered by WMU. Youth on Mission guides teenagers to a greater understanding of God’s work in the world and how they can join Him in His work.
Through Youth on Mission teenagers have the opportunity to learn about missions in such a way that they are challenged to live their lives openly for Christ in a very real and radical way. Students have the opportunity to experience the world through mission studies, cultural experiences, and hands-on missions involvement. Students learn that God can use them every day in countless ways to change their world.
Youth on Mission is a dynamic WMU missions organization for students in grades 7–12. Sixth-graders may also participate in Youth on Mission if a church’s student ministry includes sixth-graders.
Youth on Mission isn’t just the name of a group; it is the goal. It’s what we want to happen with students—to be on mission with God. As students plan and participate in missions activities like praying, giving, Bible study, ministry, and witnessing, they become Youth on Mission.
Experiences in Youth on Mission help students become aware that while God wants every person to know of His love and decide to have a relationship with Him through Christ, there are still people in the world who don’t know anything about God’s love. Involvement in Youth on Mission leads students to progress from a focus on self to a focus on others. Students learn the missions concepts of praying, giving, and doing missions. Through Youth on Mission, a foundation of missions is set for a lifetime.
Imagine if teenagers in all of our churches truly gained an understanding of what it means to be “radically involved in the mission of God.” To be radical for God’s mission is to live to the extreme or above the ordinary in an effort to advance the kingdom of God.
Youth on Mission equips youth to be dynamic, relevant, caring witnesses of Christ. Missions education starts with God’s presence in a person’s life. That’s why Youth on Mission is an important part of your students’ lives.
Through Youth on Mission, students
Students in Youth on Mission have experiences to connect with God’s presence, power, and purpose. Youth on Mission offers students in your church opportunities to grow in their relationships with God and their peers. Youth on Mission helps students learn that they can be a part of God’s work in the world. Youth on Mission allows you to provide coed missions education for your students.
It is important to note that being a teenager today is very different from being a teenager a generation ago. While some of the typical themes of search for identity, self-esteem, dating, and other relationship issues continue to ring true, the millennials face an entirely different set of challenges related to technology and an ever-evolving world.
Nothing helps Christian teenagers grow more than sharing their faith and seeing others come to know Christ as Savior. Once they've experienced that joy, they will feel more secure in their own relationships with God, and they will want more opportunities to minister to others in the name of Jesus and to tell others about Him. This is the greatest "win-win" with missions education and discipleship for students. While students are growing as Christians, they also have opportunities to lead others to Christ.
Students who are active in missions education not only learn more about biblical truths, but they also learn how to apply them in their daily lives and they have opportunities individually and in groups to put into practice what they are learning. This includes the opportunity to share their faith in Christ in a variety of ways and in a variety of settings.
