Giving to Missions

giving to missions

As the time for giving to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering  is on my mind, I have been thinking about how we teach preschoolers about giving to missions. In this world of online banking, direct deposit, debit and credit cards, how do we begin teaching preschoolers about financial giving? Many families now use automatic draft for their tithe to the church, so some preschoolers do not see a check being written or an offering envelope being given at church by their parents. Preschoolers also do not understand the value of money. To them, a nickel is worth more than a dime because the nickel is larger in size. They also think as long as Mom or Dad has a plastic card, they can pay for anything. What can we teach preschoolers about giving in today’s economic culture?

In Mission Friends we can help preschoolers begin to understand about giving to missions. Preschoolers learn about the biblical discipline of giving as teachers use Bible thoughts related to giving, such as God loves a cheerful giver (see 2 Cor. 9:7). In the Mission Friends materials, suggestions are provided to encourage older preschoolers to give money to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering and Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. Because of the choking hazard of using coins, Babies, Ones, and Twos are excluded from collecting coins for offerings. Along with the missions offerings, Threes, Fours, and Kindergartners are also encouraged to give regularly at church. Mission Friends leaders can help preschoolers understand that when we give our money throughout the year at church, part of that money is used for missions work.

Preschoolers also begin to learn how their money is used in missions work. As Mission Friends teachers, we can put this in terms that preschoolers will understand, such as missionaries buy Bibles to give to people. Preschoolers can understand that the missions offerings help missionaries pay for things such as their car and food for their family. Putting this in specific terms helps preschoolers grasp how their offerings are used in missions work.

Encourage your Mission Friends to give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering this year. It is the perfect time to begin teaching preschoolers about giving. Their understanding will grow in time. In Mission Friends the focus is on showing preschoolers that when they give their money, they are helping others to hear about God’s love.
