Unshakeable Pursuit: Don't be Shaken

Therefore – don’t be shaken!

My dear friends, stand firm and don’t be shaken. Always keep busy working for the Lord. You know that everything you do for him is worthwhile.

(1 Cor. 15:58, CEV)

The pastor of my home church always made the statement that if you see the word “therefore” go back and read what it’s there for.  If you begin at the beginning of Chapter 15 of 1 Corinthians you read that Paul is basically in the midst of a defense of the purpose and power of the resurrection of Christ.  He is making a “closing argument” of sorts to his readers.  Just as an attorney has one last moment before the jury to summarize arguments and present evidence, Paul is rounding up the points of why the resurrection of Christ is a crucial point of our faith.  He is laying a foundation on which to stand firm in faith. Then we get to verse 58. In many translations, that verse begins with the word therefore.  Therefore, “my dear friends, stand firm and don’t be shaken. Always keep busy  working for the Lord. You know that everything you do for him is worthwhile.”

So, the “therefore” guides us to look back… Paul has just shown us why we can stand firm, how we can be unmoved and unshaken, the reason we can keep working for Christ.  All of our efforts are worthwhile in light of the awesome truth of the Resurrection. In the  Resurrection, Jesus defeated sin and death and sealed it, coming back to life so that we can then live with him forever.  Jesus rose again to give us eternal life.  That is what the therefore is there for!

In my daily walk, I have moments that I feel just a wee bit shaky (or occasionally like a 8.6 earthquake is rocking my world). Presented with the realities of a sinful, fallen world, a Christ-follower has many opportunities to look away from Jesus and be shaken by the stormy sea around them.  However, when we fix our eyes upon Him;  when we read again and again the glorious works of His hands;  when we hold fast to that which we have been taught and heard, we have a stronghold to stabilize us so we cannot be shaken!

Do you have a verse that is your lifeline on the “shaky” days?  I have verses for life for the different challenges that I face. To remind myself of my passion and calling – Psalm 78:3-4.  When I need to remember that God is Sovereign and has a plan for his children–Jeremiah 29:11. When I need a strong reminder of who I serve –Acts 17:24.

Reading 1 Corinthians 15, we get a rousing speech and defense of the gospel.  In reading it, we find out what the therefore is there for—pointing us toward the hope, the power and the truth of the Resurrection. Grasp tightly today to the glorious hope, promise and salvation in the resurrection of Jesus. And don’t be shaken!

Prayer: May He who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine…be glorified and honored through me today! Father, provide the strength I need today to stand firm and not be shaken.  Grant me grace and boldness to share the truth that the resurrection makes all the difference! Amen.
