Sing We Noel: Sharing the Story of Christ with Preschoolers and Others
“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”
—Luke 2:11 (NIV)
One of my favorite Christmas songs is a traditional French carol that is often stuck on repeat throughout December. This song saturates my mind, an earworm of Christmas joy, while humming, lyrics, and my imagination fill in the choir and musical accompaniment.
“Sing We Now of Christmas” has a catchy melody, offers the opportunity for four-part harmonies, and fills the corners of the sanctuary when presented by a choir. But what I love most about this song is how well it tells the story of Jesus’ birth.
Christmas might be one of the best times of year to be passionate about the lost. We are filled with joy and expectation, and many of our Christmas traditions lend themselves well to reaching out to those around us.
A Christmas concert at church? Invite my neighbor.
Time to send Christmas cards? Create greeting cards that include a focus on the nativity and a fitting Bible verse.
Gathering around the Christmas tree? Sit next to my neighbors with only the tree lights on and listen while the Christmas story is read from the Bible.
There are so many opportunities surrounding Christmas when we can share the hope of the Messiah.
Even in Mission Friends, we can share a nativity set, specific Bible thoughts, and the Christmas story to bring the message of Jesus’ birth to our preschoolers.
And how about our dear missionaries, who are so very passionate about the lost? Many request prayers as they host Christmas parties and special events, that the message of Christ is shared and accepted.
I am inspired when I sing Christmas carols, listen to stories of missionaries, retell the Christmas story with preschoolers, and seek ways to tell those without hope about our hope. All these activities lead me to give thanks and worship our loving God.
What joy to be passionate and seek creative ways to share Jesus as we celebrate His birth.
Let this December be the month you invite the lost to join in as you, your family, and your church celebrate the Savior.
Sing we now of Christmas!
Prayer:
Father God, thank You for Your gift of Jesus. We are grateful that we can celebrate Jesus’ birth with meaningful traditions, songs, and prayers. Help us, Lord, to follow Your leading and include the lost in activities where we can share Jesus, where they can hear and respond to Your love. Fill our hearts with Your joy and our mouths with songs that praise You! For Your glory, amen.
