Missions Discipleship
Why WMU Believes in

Missions Discipleship

The Great Ommission

Many Southern Baptists are born, baptized, married, and buried in our churches yet few do missions and tell people about Jesus

You know this isn't right. Your pastor and your church know it, too. We're all on the same page, but what can you and I do? Thankfully, God is not silent about his mission.

The Whole Bible Commands the Great Commission

Every page of Scripture speaks of God's mission to save sinners. Jesus commissioned his people to make disciples. And Jesus even modeled the Great Commission for us.

God took on flesh and came to earth. Jesus sought out 12 disciples. Jesus taught them, but Jesus didn't wait until they all received passing grades in the classroom. Jesus took his disciples with him to find the woman at the well. He even sent them out on mission in Matthew 10, Mark 6, and Luke 10.

Paul, then, followed Jesus' example by taking others with him on his missionary journeys. Paul taught Timothy how to reach the lost (2 Timothy 1:13) and showed him how to reach the lost (Acts 16:1-3).

WMU's Solution

Missions Discipleship

WMU learned a long time ago that our churches will drift from the mission when there isn't a plan to help every church member find and pursue their role in the Great Commission.

Believers must be discipled in both doctrine and missions, which is why we have been working since 1888 to make sure Southern Baptists move the Great Commission from the periphery to the priority.

To help Southern Baptist prioritize the Great Commission, WMU is committed to creating resources for missions discipleship. Our missions curriculum for preschoolers, children, students, and adults is designed to help your church:

  • learn about missions
  • pray for missions
  • support missions, and
  • do missions and tell people about Jesus.

We don't believe Annie Armstrong simply stumbled upon a good idea. We believe we have found a model that works because it is based on the gospel partnerships that we see throughout the New Testament.

When your church learns about what our North American Mission Board (NAMB) and International Mission Board (IMB) missionaries are doing to make disciples, your church is better equipped to pray for missions. The more your church prays for missions, the more inclined their hearts will be to support missions through the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. And, finally, the more your church learns, prays, and supports missions, the better equipped each member will be to answer God's call to do missions and tell people about Jesus.

To help you disciple your church in missions, WMU also provides opportunities for your church to serve through compassion ministries  like WorldCrafts, Pure Water, Pure Love, and Christian Job Corp. Additionally, WMU realizes that missions discipleship requires training volunteers to be leaders, which is why we offer leadership development  through Christian Leader Learning
