Share the Why of WMU

Leadership guru and author of Start with Why Simon Sinek once said, “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” As you focus on WMU this year, focus on the “why” — why do we do what we do? We do what we do to make disciples of Jesus who live on mission.

Focus on WMU Sunday is February 16, 2025. As you plan, consider a missions takeover week on your church’s social media page. Highlight ways your church embodies the missional “why” of WMU and end with a missions celebration and project on Sunday.

7 Ideas for Highlighting WMU Ministries

Here are seven ideas you can use to highlight the ministries of WMU on social media and in your church newsletter or bulletin during the week leading up to Focus on WMU Sunday. Also, you can create additional posts with quotes, photos, and short videos.

Missions-Minded Monday

Share stories of how WMU groups shaped key leaders and other missions-minded individuals in your church who are now following God’s call because of their exposure to missions discipleship in the local church. Include stories from those involved at all age levels and how their groups inspire them to live on mission. Post these testimonies to social media with #missionsmindedmonday.

Training Tuesday

It’s time to take off the training wheels. Encourage all age-level leaders to highlight the best advice they’ve received regarding ministry. Challenge them to include any state or national training events or resources that contributed to their leadership development. Be sure to include advice for all age-level missions groups. Post advice from your leaders with #trainingtuesday.

We Love Missionaries Wednesday

Supporting missionaries is the heartbeat of WMU. On Wednesday, feature the everyday ways your missions discipleship groups support missionaries through generosity and prayer. Highlight the work of your state WMU office and how it helps your church love missionaries well. Post with #welovemissionarieswednesday.

Throwback Thursday

God’s past faithfulness ignites our passion for fervent prayer. Gather photos, and highlight a story of missions faithfulness from your church’s past. Intentionally include photos from all age-level groups. Connect this story with your church’s current missional prayer focus, and use #throwbackthursday.

Friendship Friday

Many people don’t realize WMU does more than missions discipleship. Explore ways to develop gospel friendships through WMU Compassion Ministries and critical issues such as fair trade, clean water, humanitarian aid, and mental health. Link to the WMU Compassion Ministries at wmu.com/compassion-ministries, and use #friendshipfriday.

State Missions Saturday

Celebrate what your state is doing to advance the gospel in your backyard. Use your week of prayer for state missions resources to reemphasize the impact of mission support. Consider revisiting a featured missionary from your prayer guide, learning about his or her current status, and sharing about your state’s generosity in action by posting with #statemissionssaturday.

Serving Sunday

Time to mobilize the Lord’s people! Plan a churchwide serve day to motivate your congregation and engage those beyond the walls of the church building. Provide opportunities for evangelistic service including prayerwalking, light carpentry and landscaping, serving meals, partnering with existing international ministries, ministering to residents of low-income housing, and visiting senior adults. The opportunities are endless.

Equip participants of all ages with evangelism training. Gather a team to plan and facilitate each activity. Tip: Include those not yet involved in WMU and individuals from all stages of life on your planning team. Use #servingsunday to post photos and share about your serving Sunday.
