Her Lottie Story

As we sat at her kitchen table eating a warm dessert topped with ice cream, Pat told me her Lottie story. Many years ago, her family moved across the country for her husband’s job. They were leaving their hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, and heading to San Francisco. It was quite a cultural shock for a woman who had never been west of the Mississippi River.

Excitement mingled with anxiety. Pat and her husband traveled to California to look for a home for their family. They were shocked by the price tags and speculated how they could afford the move. After a long day of searching, they returned to the hotel discouraged and depressed. They wondered if this was the right decision for their family. Maybe they should just stay in Kentucky.

The next morning her husband suggested they take one more look at a house they had visited the day before. They had noticed a small Southern Baptist church nearby. They drove to the community and stopped by the church. It was open, and they were able to look around before anyone noticed them.

They found a poster for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, information about the church’s GAs, and a program called Friendship International House. These were all things very familiar to Pat and her husband. It was comforting to see the Lottie Moon material and realize some things would be the same in California as in Kentucky. It brought them peace. Pat’s family moved to the area and this became their church. God allowed them to serve there and make lifelong friends.

It is of great comfort to know Southern Baptists across our country and around the world unite for the spread of the gospel. In 1888, the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering was established to empower the international missions efforts for Southern Baptists. Your giving enables missionaries to be sent to make disciples and multiply churches among unreached peoples and places for the glory of God. May the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering help reconnect your church family to the core of Christmas—Jesus was born to save the world.

Father,

Reveal to us Your heart for the nations. Call Your people to prayer and sacrificial giving. Help us become global intercessors willing to battle on our knees for our missionaries and Your work. May we approach Your throne with boldness and conviction. Show Your glory among the nations. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
