Prayer, Calgary, Holly Procita, Preschool

With the arrival of summer, many churches in the US relax their children’s ministry schedules. This is not the case with Southwinds Church in Calgary! Holly Procita, Community Outreach Coordinator at Southwinds, tells us Calgary experiences snow and cold weather for 8 to 10 months each year. Calgarians love the opportunity to be outside when the weather is warm. So, summer is the prime time to reach out to families.

Southwinds hosts between 6 and 10 summer camps each year. As you read this, Holly and her ministry team are working tirelessly to wrap up all the details for this year’s summer camps. The camps include sports camps, music and drama camps, and Kid’s Camp, which most of us would call Vacation Bible School.

At every camp, devotional times are planned to introduce campers to stories from the Bible. Every camper receives a Bible to take home. At one camp, a young man was given a Beginner’s Bible to take home. The next morning he returned to camp and asked for another Bible because he had read the entire Beginner’s Bible overnight. Southwinds prays that the Bibles they share will plant seeds that reproduce and bear fruit among the almost 95 percent of Canadians who do not yet know Jesus.

Holly recently shared the following prayer requests with us. Will you join us in praying for church members and volunteers who are leading the camps and for the children and families who are attending camp, many of whom will hear the gospel for the first time?

“Please pray for our Summer Kick-Off Celebration on July 4. We are inviting the entire community of Cranston (around 10,000 people) to join us for hot dogs, pop, and chips! We will also be using our inflatables, cotton candy, popcorn, and snow cone machines. We have a youth choir coming from North Carolina who will be performing and sharing the gospel with the people present. It’s a big thing to plan, organize, and execute. Please pray this event will continue to earn us trust with our community families and that the gospel will be presented clearly.

Please pray for more kids to register for our Ocean Commotion Kids Camp. This is our version of VBS. It is a challenge to do in an outdoor field but we are trying some new ideas for decorations this year. Please pray that we will be able to recruit the right teachers and assistants to serve with us during the week. This is our one camp of the summer that our own church family takes complete responsibility for without any assistance from a mission team. Pray that everything comes together as I know it will!”

As Holly and her teams are making final preparations for summer camp, thousands of Mission Friends® will be praying for them. Imagine. Even though we are hundreds of miles apart, God is allowing us to join in the work at Southwinds. His timing is beautiful.
