Getting to Know Las Vegas

During May, GAs, RAs and CAs will learn about what God is doing in Las Vegas, Nevada, through Cynthia and Tom Martin, who work with refugees in their city.

Las Vegas is an interesting city! Here are some facts about the city:

  • If you were to spend the one night in every hotel room in Las Vegas, it would take you 288 years to do so!
  • For the past few years, Las Vegas has had more than 41 million people visit their city each year!
  • Las Vegas has many landmarks. One landmark that has been around a long time is the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. (See the photo to the right.) It was built in 1959.
  • There are so many lights in Las Vegas that people consider it to be the brightest spot on Earth!
  • Over 300 couples get married every day in Las Vegas!
  • Each year, Las Vegas usually receives about 4 inches of rain.

But there’s even more to the city of Las Vegas than just those numbers. You see, there’s a city filled with people who need Jesus as their Savior and Lord!

The North American Mission Board says that with a population just a little less than 2 million in the city, there are only 113 Southern Baptist churches. When you do the math, that means that there is only 1 Southern Baptist Convention church for every 18,316 people!

The vast lostness in Las Vegas is one of the important reasons we chose to focus on the city during May. Take time this month to pray for the people in the city, the 113 Southern Baptist churches, the church planters and pastors and members in those churches. Pray that God would bring a mighty revival to the city and that many more people will come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Be sure to pray for Tom and Cynthia Martin as they continue to serve and minister to people there.
