Getting to Know Appalachia

How much do you know about Appalachia? Do you know where it is located? Who lives there? The ministry needs that are found there?

During September, girls and boys will learn about this vast part of North America: both the people who call it home and the ministry being done by missionaries like Bill Barker.

Here are a few details about the Appalachian Mountains that may be shared with your children:

  • The mountain range stretches from Canada to Alabama.
  • The highest point in the Appalachian Mountains is located in North Carolina.
  • The Appalachian Mountains are filled with all kinds of animals: deer, foxes, black bears, and more!

But there is so much more to learn about the Appalachian region! There are so many needs found there that we can help with. In Appalachia, we find that:

  • The poverty rate in some parts of Appalachia can reach 20% of the population.
  • Many residents must choose between buying food and paying their rent and utilities.
  • Many places in Appalachia are up to 90% unchurched!

As children get to know Appalachia, Bill Barker, and the countless volunteers who serve in this vast region of our nation, they’ll discover ways God can use them to minister to those who live in this area.

During September, come to Appalachia! Discover what you and your church can do to minister to the millions who live there.
