Missions Journey: Students FAQs

Missions Journey: Students FAQs

Who should use Missions Journey: Students?
Any student group (grades 7-12), including Acteens, Challengers, or Youth on Mission, that desires to engage its students in missions and empower them to share God’s love.

What are the benefits of Missions Journey: Students?

  • Missions discipleship is holistic. Students learn how the gospel transforms every area of their lives.
  • Students’ leadership skills are stretched as they are encouraged to lead discussions, plan missions projects, seek out needs in their own communities, and discover how to share God’s love.
  • Students take leadership roles and lead discussions. Adults become facilitators who ensure students have what they need to be successful.
  • Lessons require minimal planning and are fully customizable. Leaders can use from one lesson to four lessons per month and can add the supplemental activities as needed.

What is the prayer calendar? How do I use it?
The Missionary Prayer Calendar is a birthday calendar of all currently serving International Mission Board missionaries and North American Mission Board missionaries. Find the prayer calendar here.

Why videos?
Gen Z regularly engages with social media and videos to gain knowledge and learn directly from experts. For missions discipleship, students want to hear directly from missionaries. Video is a great response to that desire.

Where does the video footage originate?
Our featured missionaries create their own videos and submit the raw footage to our team. Then we edit the footage to create stories and lessons that reflect what the missionary experiences on the field. IMB and NAMB help us secure missionary stories, and we value their support.

How can we view the videos?

  • You will receive links to the videos in your digital unit. Simply click the link, and you will be directed to the video.
  • Watch the videos from the host site, Vimeo, using your data plan or your church’s wi-fi.
  • Or, download the videos to a personal digital device ahead of time. If you don’t have home internet service, most libraries, restaurants and coffee shops provide free wi-fi.
  • Many teens have smart phones, and they can help you access the videos. Teach leadership accountability by assigning different teens the responsibility of downloading the videos each week.

Why can we see some missionaries’ faces but not others?

Some of our missionaries work in high-security areas, so we can’t see their faces or the faces of the people they work with. In these cases, you’ll see their feet and hands, or use a lighting effect that would allow for a face to be hidden as we get a glimpse into their world without compromising their safety.

We’ve used Acteens Leader and The Mag, Challengers Leader, or Youth on Mission Leader before. How is Missions Journey: Students similar?

Missions discipleship remains the sole purpose in Missions Journey: Students. Students will learn about missions from missionaries serving on the field, study what the Bible says about missions and apply it to their own lives, and learn to share Jesus with their community and world.

How is Missions Journey: Students different from Acteens Leader and The Mag, Challengers Leader and Youth on Mission Leader?

  • Video driven: Students view “selfie” style videos straight from the missionary on the field so they are learning from the experts.
  • Student ownership. Students are challenged to solve real-world problems and take the lead in missions experiences.
  • Minimal preparation. Lesson supplies consist of items you already have on hand or can easily find at your community dollar store.
  • Digital delivery. Lessons are always available at your fingertips. You can print the unit on your home or church computer or use it directly on your device.

Missions Journey: Students is written to be co-ed. How do I make it feel like it was written for Acteens, my girls-only group?

  • Add another cultural experience each lesson. Look for ideas on Pinterest or coordinate with your Girls in Action leader. (Girls in Action is for 1-6th grades girls.) Develop leadership skills by assigning one Acteen a month to find an additional recipe or craft to support your lessons.
  • Use the Supplemental Activities and Prayer Calendar Activity suggestions. The girls will expect to do some type of activity and participate in the Prayer Calendar each unit.

How will I receive my materials?

After ordering the materials, you will receive an email with the materials included as a PDF attachment. Just click on the attachment link, and either print the materials or download them to your personal device.

If you order the One-Year Plan, your materials will be delivered to your inbox the first business day of every month prior to the month the materials will be used. For example, the unit for October will be emailed the first business day in September.

Please be sure to add us to your email contacts list to ensure that our emails doesn't go to your junk email box.

We have more than one student missions discipleship group. How do we order the new materials?

First, let us say thank you for your church's commitment to offering missions discipleship to teens!

If you have more than one group, you will need to order one package for every group, up to three groups. To help churches steward their resources, we've placed a cap of three on digital orders. So, if you have more than three leaders, you can purchase three packages, and share the the PDF with each of your leaders.

Can I share the Missions Journey: Students materials with others?

No. Unless your church meets the criteria above (more than three discipleship groups), you do not have permission to share these materials with others.
