As I Have Done to You

Friends

“If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you” (John 13:14–15 ESV1)

Recently I asked my Mission Friends® how Jesus wants us to treat others. “Be nice.” “Love each other.” “Take care of each other.” “Help each other.” Ah, we were on the right track. And then, sweet little Sadie said, “Do what others need, even when it’s hard.”

Yes. Even when it’s hard. Do what others need, even when it’s hard. Even when you are tired. Even when you don’t feel like it. Even when the person in need has hurt you or treated you unjustly. If we really think about it, doesn’t this statement get to the very heart of grace—serving and loving others even when that service and love is unmerited?

As this new year dawns, let’s take these words of Jesus as our personal mission, to do for others as Jesus has done for us. Let’s follow His example. Let’s serve others as He served others, regardless of how we are treated. Let’s treat others with love and gentleness and dignity, even if we are ridiculed or mocked. Let’s exercise patience and kindness in the face of intolerance and anger. Let’s show endurance and strength in the midst of uncertain times.

More than any words we speak, actively demonstrating grace will bring others to the light of our Savior. May your year be filled with opportunities to love and serve others in His name and for His glory.

Pray: Father, help me to become all things to all people. Give me wisdom to see their needs and the strength to meet those needs. Please give me the words that You want me to speak so that I may speak words of grace and love and affirmation for those who need to hear Your love spoken. Please show me how to demonstrate the love and help that others so desperately seek. Thank You for the grace and mercy You have poured out into my life. Amen.
