By All Means

By All Means

Jesus’ love for people was evident as He reached out to others around him. As we read the gospels, we see the compassion He had for people. Read Matthew 9:36: “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”(NIV1)

When Jesus looked at the people dotting the hillside and scattered here and there, He saw them with eyes of love. An image came to Him of sheep scattered across a hillside and in need of a shepherd.

The love Jesus had for people was evident in the care He gave to others. In almost every place in the gospels in which His compassion for others is mentioned, it is followed with a description of Jesus’ actions toward the people. Matthew 14:14 tells that Jesus had compassion on the people and healed their sick loved ones. In Matthew 15:32, Jesus expresses His compassion for the people, and then He proceeds to feed over 4,000 people with 7 loaves of bread and a few fish.

Matthew 20:34 records that Jesus had compassion on 2 blind men, and He touched their eyes for them to receive sight. In Mark 1:41, Jesus was filled with compassion for a man with leprosy. Jesus reached out and touched the man, and the leprosy was gone immediately.

In the touching account of John 11, in which Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, Jesus was so moved at Mary’s sorrow that He wept. His love for Lazarus was so evident that the people said, “See how he loved him!” (John 11:36). Then Jesus went to the dead man’s tomb and called Lazarus back to life. Jesus’ love for others led Him to meet their needs through His actions.

Even as Jesus’ love for others led Him to action, let us follow His example by first seeing others through Christ’s eyes of love, and then following through with acts of love. Take a look at the preschoolers in your care in Mission Friends. It is easy to say, “I love preschoolers!” It is not as easy to see their needs and take the actions required to meet those needs in Christ’s name. Look with love at the needs preschoolers may have while in your classroom at church or within their families. Follow Christ’s example as you seek to meet needs through eyes of love.

Pray: Dear God, Thank You for Jesus’ examples of loving others. Help me to look at preschoolers and their families through eyes of love. Lead me to follow Christ’s example by meeting the needs of others through actions filled with love. Amen.
