By All Means

show Christ's love

One evening as I pulled into the church parking lot on my way to teach Mission Friends, I prayed, “Lord, Help me to just love our preschoolers tonight. Help them to see Your love in me.” I always want my preschoolers to enjoy learning about missions. I prepare for the sessions in Mission Friends and choose activities from Mission Friends Leader that I think will be just right for my preschoolers. I tote some supplies from home and gather other materials at church. We have a good time learning about missions through the activities and stories. But on that night I was convicted that all of it was for naught if the preschoolers didn’t experience God’s love in our Mission Friends sessions.

As followers of Christ, we are called on to demonstrate His love to others. We see this throughout the Bible, as in Colossians 3:12 (NIV1): “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” The word compassion speaks to the love we show to others. Clothing ourselves with Christ’s love is important for us as Mission Friends teachers. Even as we prepare each week by gathering supplies for teaching, we also must prepare our hearts to teach by clothing ourselves with Christ’s love.

In what ways can you show Christ’s love to preschoolers and their families this month as you teach Mission Friends? It may be as you say the Bible thought, Jesus said, “I love you” (see John 15:9). Christ’s love might show as you help a preschooler who is having trouble putting together a puzzle. It could be your patience with a preschooler who is tired and whining. Christ’s love shows through as you celebrate an accomplishment a preschooler makes, however small.

Each week this month before teaching Mission Friends, let’s be sure to clothe ourselves with His love. Look for ways that you can demonstrate Christ’s love to the preschoolers you teach. Even as you make sure you have great activities to teach preschoolers about missions, also make sure that they are learning about God’s love. Look for the opportunities He gives you to show Christ’s love to preschoolers.

Pray: Loving God, I thank You for showing Your love for me in giving Your Son. Clothe me with Your love every week as I teach Mission Friends, that Your love would show to preschoolers. Help me to demonstrate Your love as I teach, that all I say and do would be surrounded with Your love. Amen.
