DAY ONE - 30 days of prayer for pastors and missionaries

Be alert, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong. Do everything in love. (1 Corinthians 16:13-14, CSB)

Paul’s admonition to “stand firm” is sandwiched between a warning and a command: “Be alert” and “Do everything in love.” This is an interesting combination of messages.

The warning reminds us there is danger. Certainly, danger lurks everywhere - both in the world and even in the temptations of our own hearts.

And, it reminds us to be alert to our fears – fears of failing, of not being enough, and of disappointment. We must stand firm against both external and internal fears.

On the other end of the spectrum from fear, Paul reminds us to “Do everything in love.” As we resolve to be strong and stand firm, we must also relate to others with grace and mercy and love.

Dear Father, please enable pastors and missionaries to stand firm in their faith today. Strengthen them to face down their fears. Give them wisdom to help others who are living in fear. Give them added energy as they pour out their own lives to encourage and love and walk with others in this time of great uncertainty.

Thank you for the knowledge that all believers can stand firm because our strength is in You.
