August: Nehemiah's Wall Cereal Treats

This month, children will learn how Nehemiah showed unshakable faith and led God's people to rebuild the wall in Jerusalem.

For a fun treat that relates to this month's Bible story, make these cereal treats. Cut them into "brick" shapes and stack them like a wall on a serving tray to form Nehemiah's wall.

(serving size: 10–12)

What you need:
• 8 cups crispy rice cereal
• 4 cups fruity crispy rice cereal
• 1 stick butter
• 2 10.5-ounce bags miniature marshmallows
• large pot
• mixing spoon
• 9-by-13-inch pan
• wax paper

What you do:
1. Melt the butter in a large pot on low heat.
2. Slowly add both bags of marshmallows. Stir constantly until melted.
3. Turn off the heat.
4. Pour the cereal into the marshmallow mixture. Mix until the cereal is coated evenly.
5. Spoon the cereal into a 9-by-13-inch pan. Use wax paper to help you press the cereal evenly into the pan.
6. Let the treats cool.

August: Christmas Red or Christmas Green

To get children excited about participating in your Christmas in August project, play this high-energy Christmas game.

1. Divide children into two equal teams.
2. Tell teams to face each other.
3. Assign one side to be "red" and the other to be "green."
4. Call out either red or green.
5. If red is called, the "greens" must turn and run to touch the wall on their side of the meeting space before the "reds" tag them.
6. If any "greens" are tagged, they will become "reds" and go to the other side for the next round.
7. The same applies if green is called.
8. Play until everyone is on one side.

August: Business People Wanted!

Jamie Thompson understands how church planters must work to provide a home, food, and clothing for their families. It can be very hard to work a job while also trying to build relationships and make decisions about what needs to be done in a new church. Many church planters ask other churches and individuals to give money to help begin the church.

Jamie believes Christian business people are not asked often enough to help with church plants. Instead of giving money to the church plant, business people could invest in them. What’s the difference?

When a person gives money to a church plant, the money is spent to help with the expenses of the church or the church planters. When someone makes an investment, he or she is spending money on something that continues to make money.

When Jamie and his brother purchased a building and renovated it to provide apartments, that was an investment. The people who live in the apartments pay rent. The rent money is used to help Reborn Community Church in Garfield Park. Jamie has to take care of the apartments, but he doesn't have to take care of them full time.

The kind of money the apartments provide is called passive income. The kind of money that a person makes while working a job is called active income. This is because the person has to act, or do something, to get the money.

Jamie didn't stop with just one building. He bought and renovated others. He has worked with other business people. They have purchased buildings in Garfield Park and turned them into passive income.

Jamie would like other church planters to talk with Christian business people. He believes business people could help church planters make passive income. The investments could be laundry facilities, automatic car washes, and other businesses that provide income without spending a lot of time on them. Passive income would let the church planters spend more time on their church plants and with their families.

August: The Thompson Children Serve God, Too

Jamie and Andrea Thompson are raising their four boys in Garfield Park. Payton, Ethan, Mason, and Tyson are important workers in Reborn Community Church.

They attend the children's events at the church. They also go to church events and serve alongside other members. The boys are good at helping clean the church, too. On Sundays, they look for ways to help people who come to church.

Their dad, Jamie, says their entire family is on mission. They look for ways to help others know Jesus and ways to work in the church.

How do you help in your church? Draw a picture that shows how you serve.
